Henrik Ibsen and his wife Suzannah lived in the apartment on Arbins gate, where the museum is located, from 1895 to 1906. In 2006, a renovated and authentic apartment opened to the public, generating significant Norwegian and international interest. After three years of renovation, the theater stage opened for guest performances in the spring of 2022, and Ibsen Museum & Teater was established as the new name. The museum reopened on July 1, 2023.
The museum has its origins in 1990 when actor Knut Wigert initiated the lease of the apartment with the aim of making it accessible to the public. In 1993, the operation of the museum was taken over by the Norsk Folkemuseum.
