Henrik Ibsen lived abroad for large periods of his life, but in 1891 he returned to Norway, and here in Arbins gate he spent his last years.
The tour goes through all the rooms in the entire apartment that Henrik and Suzannah rented in their last years, both the luxurious, official rooms, and the more spartan, private rooms.
Step into another time
A visit to Henrik and Suzannah Ibsen is like stepping over the threshold to another time. From the moment you enter the apartment, you are standing in a time capsule from the late 1800s – a home filled with art, memories and traces of one of the world's most famous playwrights.
The apartment, which is located on the third floor of a venerable apartment building, is just a stone's throw from the Royal Palace and appears as it was when Ibsen lived here from 1895 until his death in 1906.
The atmosphere of city life and sophisticated culture characterizes all the rooms. Each room tells a story about Ibsen's working life, family life and elegant taste.
Here you will find the Ibsen family's original furniture, some in dark wood, others with floral upholstery, gold leaf and pompoms.
Beautiful silk curtains and period details – all with a touch of sophistication. Patterned carpets and linoleum, beautiful paintings and works of art remind us of a life filled with inspiration and travel.
Ibsen's Study
Ibsen's study, the heart of the apartment and the museum, stands as a silent testimony to his creative power. At his desk, he completed his last two works, surrounded by books, memorabilia, and art that inspired him.
The room radiates peace of mind and profound reflection, as if you can feel the presence of the great poet himself.
The apartment gives an intimate and vivid picture of Ibsen as both a poet and a human being. You can almost see him wandering through the rooms, deep in his thoughts, perhaps with a glance towards Kristiania city or the castle.
The Spirit of Henrik Ibsen
Visiting Henrik Ibsen's home is like entering his spiritual and creative world. When you step into the house, you get a feeling of getting closer to his inner life and artistic soul.
All the rooms, from the furniture to the small things, has been carefully preserved and stands as it was placed when Ibsen was alive. All to give visitors a feeling of "meeting" Ibsen and understanding his way of thinking, and art.
It is as if he is still present between the walls, with his unique view of the world, which we can still feel through the atmosphere of his home.
